Domain Names

The Internet manages itself by giving every machine a unique number or address (IP Number), a bit like a telephone number. It is this number that is used to direct people to you through the Internet. There are so many of these numbers that they are allocated names (Domain Names) to make them easier to use – names like ‘amazon.co.uk’ or ‘praeparo.com’.

This name becomes a very important way people will find you and a customer may guess it, see it on your stationery, or on the side of one of your delivery vans. For a business trading on the Internet it is your most important brand, and choosing the domain name is like choosing any other brand name.

It can help to choose a domain name based on your company or trading name – our name is ‘praeparo.com’. Other companies choose to use a known brand, or what they do. Unfortunately, you might find somebody already owns the name you have selected, and you then need to find an alternative.

You will also need to decide what sort of domain name you want. This is the suffix on the end, for example the .com in praeparo.com. There is a rough standard:

UK based commercial organizations use ‘.co.uk’
UK based non-profit organizations use ‘.org.uk’
US, or international organizations use ‘.com’.

It is good practice to purchase the ‘.com’ and ’.co.uk’ versions because you don't want to put off international sales and you don't want a competitor to have your name. In this case you will have one address but both the names will point at it.

Most companies will package domain names FREE into the overall design so don’t go buying until you have selected your design company.
