Search engine keyword investigation

A website needs to be designed with your search engine keywords or phrases in mind. These are terms that search engine users would probably type into the search box to look for your product or service. As a large percentage of your website visitors will find you through the search engines it is critical to get these right.

Selecting the best phrases to use is the critical factor. It is a balance between the popularity of the keyword vs. the competition. Most people will only look at the first 3 pages of search results returned. If the phrase is too generalised then it is very hard to get in the top pages as you will compete against millions of other websites including the big ones like Amazon. For example, a generalised term may have 50,000 daily searches which sounds good but the competition may be many millions of websites, where as phrase of 1000 daily searches may have a smaller competition. Thus, if you have 10 pages and we can get to the top of the primary phrase for each you will have potentially 10000 people, whereas being on page 10 of the larger more popular search phrases may well return none.
